Is there a brand/model of tire that is considered "Best for the money", specifically for Explorers?
I am probably going to hit Costco or Sam's Club to save a little money, but they have more brands than a lot of tire stores...
Is it better to stick with the stock P235/75 R15 or should I move up to the 255/70 R16 for a little beefier look?
BTW they are offering lifetime plugging, rotation, and balancing at both places and Sam's is offering Hazard protection that extends the warranty to cover snags, bruises, impact breaks, or punctures... suddenly they are a really good deal...

Do your self a favor and get Michelin's. Do not try for one minute to try and save money by buying cheap tire's.
I've researched the subject myself and found the Bridgestone Dueller AT Revo's are highly rated as well as the Yokohama Geolander ATII+ and Dunlop Rover Radial RVXT. Those would be my choices to research. I'm not ready for a new set yet but when I am it will be one of those three.
I have Michelins now and have been very happy... I'm not even thinking about putting some no name tires on... Even though I like a bargain, I still stay with brands I know and trust...
I just replaced the recall replacement Firestones with Bridgestone Dueller AT Revos about 500 miles ago. They are vey smooth, quiet and the tread is rather aggressive....They cost me a bit more than others would have but they are worth it !!

The worst thing about the Firestones was the air pressure they told you to use.
Bridgestone owns Firestone.
I bought a set of Firestone Destination LE tires for mine. I know before everyone flames me about the Firestone thing, I researched owner reviews at a major online tire store and found people rating them better than Michelins. I decided to try them out. I am glad I did. They are quiet, and most surprising made my explorer smoother riding than it ever has been. They also have good traction wet or dry. At $80 per tire I believe they are one of the best tire bargains out there. Highly recommended.
I believe Firestone makes a good tire. The first set on mine were Firestone FR380 tires. They were good tires. I agree that the Ford recommended pressure was part of the problem witht he wilderness tires. I also agree that cheap tires and explorers don't mix. the second set I put on mine were a no name tire and they were awful from the moment I put them on, until I took them off 25,000 miles later. They were not worn out I was just tired of the rough ride and vibrations caused by the cheap pieces.
I have a 2000 X and just bought Goodyear Wrangler Silentarmors.. these are excellent tires..much better than the wrangler rt/s and Revo's..they ride very smooth and silent with extra side support by way of Kevlar all over...the sidewalls are alot stiffer alowing for better control and response on the highway..my suggestion...definately gor for the silentarmor wranglers!!
Also..i've put 6k miles on them..bought them new for 140 a piece and drove them non-stop from Las Vegas to Ohio..excellent in the snow...less noise than even my previous tires and alot beefier looking..and i felt better knowing they had as much kevlar as my local police force..so if u can afford them...they're worth ever penny!!
