Attempted to install new glow plugs last night and snapped two of them off! Is this a job for a drill and easy-out or does the head need to come off? Can I drive it this way until fixed? FYI the ones I removed were "Champion".
First what exactly snapped off.......the portion above the threads or the tip in the engine. Visit ....... http://www.members.shaw.ca/k2pilot/ and read GP info.
Put some (all) truck info in the signature area......go up to quick links and edit a signature.
The porition above the theads, and I was surprized at how easy it broke! Not much pressure required. Is there a possiblity of the tip now falling off if I drive it this way? Should I try the easy-out or will drilling the center allow the tip to fall down inside the head?
Due to the fact they are Chumpions......there could also be the swelled tip problem next to overcome. Which ever GP you work on bring that piston to TDC before doing anything. I will email you some info I have posted here before re TDC and how to find it on each cylinder.
If the cylinder is at TDC then there should be little opportunity for the tip to drop into the cylinder as there is only 35thou distance from piston top to head.
You should be able to drive it like that as long as it starts, if needed you could plug it in as long as the engine block restriction 83-85.5 does not apply.
Thanks for the info! The truck is an 89 F-350 with a 7.3 IDI and ZF 5-SPD. 155,000 miles. Runs great and I typically get 20mpg+ on long drives. During the warmer months (April - Oct) I use a fuel mixture of 5gals filtered veg oil, 5gals diesel fuel, 1gal used motor oil, and 10oz acetone.
As for the tip curling problem I have not noticed this problem on any of the other 6 GP's that I did get out. The GP's that snapped off are the last two cylinders (closest to the fire wall) on the drivers side. The new GP's are Beru and I bought a new International controller as well.
Cat....... those are "Rocket fuel" ingrediants............. I would suggest if you spray a release agent PB blaster.....???? on the GPs that are stuck for a few days. You may win the battle easier. With not having those two GPs in the loop on starts there will be significant difference in the controllers reactions. Cycling the ignition switch 3 times until the WTS light goes out with a start attempt on the third may do it easier.
