Hello all
I was hoping someone could tell me about VACUME PUMP on a 7.3L diesel. my tranmission doesnt shift right, my brakes dont work right. Ive called lots of places and they say It will cost $300-$500 for a brand new vacume pump with no guarantee that it will work. Local parts store says he never sold one that did work. does anyone know anything about this.
i just put a new one on my 88. i got it from napa. it is now pulling 23 inches of vacuum again. i believe it was $125, and the pulley was $27 from ford
if these people tell you that a new pump will not do anything, and the parts stores say they never sold a new pump that worked, i would
A: not let them ever work on your truck again, because they do not know what they are talking about, and
B:find a parts store with people that know what they are selling, because that one is the same as A

I got mine at Autozone $115 a quick check is to remove a vacuum line ie: the line from the pump to the distribution manifold in the firewall RH side, with the line removed start the truck and let it idle should create a high vacuum and a high volume. If not change it Autozone P/N 64-1006 if they don't have a pulley puller that will fit, you can drill 2 holes 180 degrees apart next to the center hub and get a small 2 arm puller through them and onto the hub to pull it with out damaging the pulley.
Some of the 80's trucks did not have very good vacuum pumps.
In Trucks made in the 90's and up these pumps have become very reliable. I got 211k on my original pump in my 93' and Dad's got 400k on his 92' also on the original vacuum pump.
hello , thanks for the reply
vacume pump runs off of belts very near altnator. truck is slow to shift, then clunks into gear (automatic trans) till rpm of motor rises. there is brakes but very little (new brakes all around) brakes work better when in newtral and rpm of motor rises.
The main thing is everyplace I go, they say(brand new) they never put one on that worked. they say go stright to ford and get them to install. my question is "what is the danger to a vacume pump when being handled before being installed." how can I prevent this. ford Dealer is very expencive. I have to do it myself. do you know some do's and dont's when buying and installing a vacume pump for a 1988 ford diesel 7.3L super heavy duty extended cab 3/4 ton.
any info would be great
thanks
post #4 above, from discount ford parts, a FTE sponsor, is a very good price. it is about the same as the price of a rebuilt pump from napa online.
the most likely reason you have poor brakes is that as the pump gets old, it can not produce the vacuum required for the trans and power booster to function properly. the trans needs 20+ inches of vacuum. once vacuum falls below around 16 inches, the power booster will not function properly.
after the new pump install, my 88 now pulls 24 inches of vacuum.
Thanks all for replys
Ive checked Discountfordparts on everything
Vacume, vacume pump, vacume booster, vacume pump booster,
Ive tried looking up part E4TZ-2A451-A LIST, E4TZ-2A451-A, E4TZ-2A451,
just tells me "There are no items in the current category!"
I have re & re vacum pumps 6 times in the last 10 years on two trucks and I am no mechanic. These pumps are very easy to replace, two bolts holding the backing plate to the block...once you remove the pump, the backing plate is installed on the new pump [4 bolts]. My best advice to you is to purchase a vacum pump with a pulley, it a few bucks more but well worth it especialy if you do not have the tools [pulley puller]to do the job. You might want replace your vacum hose at this time as well...you can purchase this at any parts store cheap. If you need any more info, I suggest a mannual, I have Haynes and it has pictures, good luck!
i just tried it. on the home page, end of the first paragraph you will see click here in blue. click on that for the second page.
scroll down till you see the pic of the F650 pickup on the right, and on the left will be 2 search by factory part number. enter E4TZ-2A451-A
next to that is a box that says select make. click on ford, then click on search next to that box.
it will take you to the product page with msrp price, core price, and your price.
under that will be add to cart. click on that, and it will start you on the way to the secure checkout.
I had some issues with mine. I don't know if this is normal but there is a rubber line running all the way from the pump to the brakes. The line would colapse under vacuum and the brakes did not work well. The mechanic mis-diagnosed this as a problem with my calipers. Replacing the line with a new line solved the problem.
I'm surprised this is not a hard line with rubber on each end...
