Sometimes when i go to start my truck after the "wait to start" light goes off it wont try to kick over. If i turn the key to the off position and go through the starting procedure again it will kick over just fine. does anyone have an idea why this is happening?
Welcome
It could be weak glow plugs, bad glow plug relay, weak batteries.
Check out the "doesnt want to start" thread, there are a lot of good suggestions there.
I filled out the signature stuff thanks for tellin me to do that. Chapguy how is your manual doin? have you rebuilt it or anything like that. I think i may need to do synchros soon.. I just had new glow plugs installed but i will check that thread. thanks
Very easy, its located under the plastic cover to the left (passenger) side of the fuel filter. 4 wires connect to it an its held on by 2 nuts. 10-15 minutes tops.
I put a new glow plug relay in an the problem is still there. when i go to start the truck i hear a click and that is it.. but if i do the process over again it will than start. anyother ideas of why it wont even try to kick over sometimes but other times it starts perfectly? thanks i appreciate the help!
I know there is a clutch safety switch, the cluch has to be depressed before it will start. When my pedal assembly was worn out I was stranded, and the truck wouldnt start. I had to jump the starter relay by the pass. battery to make it start. Maybe your clutch petal isnt going in all the way to hit this saftey switch? or your pedal assembly is worn out. Get under the dash and look for anything unusual and see if the pedal is activating this switch. Sorry for leading you down the wrong path, I guess I wasnt paying attention to your first post.
44, my tranny is going strong with 160K on the odometer. I did have to replace the plastic bushing at the clutch rod end last summer. If it's worn badly your clutch won't depress far enough to trip the neutral safety switch. Try standing on it hard and make sure it's all the way to the floor. If it starts consistently you may need to replace that bushing. I can lead you to a couple of fixes that are far better than buying an $11 bushing (that will break again) if needed.
Welcome to FTE. It is habit forming and it makes owning a powerstroke fun and easy! Don't worry about buying an extra GPR. The price is cheap and in six months after being here on the forum you will need it because your truck will be all fixed up and you'll be helping other guys fix their Powerstrokes. You're bound to find someone who needs one and you know your old one is good. It's a good, used emergency replacement unit.
Oh yeah. About your starting problem. If I were you I would get a spare starter motor. You can get a brand new one on e-bay for less than a hundred, delivered to your door. They are a lot more than that if you go to a parts store. If you're a new owner then you need to get a CPS(camshaft positioning sensor) off ebay and keep it in your glovebox with a 10 mm wrench or socket. That is the most common cause of dead on the road powerstrokes. 2 minute fix. I think most people here have had to change their CPS at one time or another.

maybe a bad battery connection? id go to walmart or napa or anywhere that test batterys and have them tested. it sounds like your batterys are weak.
