KRUSE, no static from me. The "disconnect" cable test is fine for a 50s era carb vehicle. On an emission controlled Fuel Injected vehicle, NEVER do this!!!!You'll get more electrical gremlins, problems, than ever. Many times this causes various "check engine" lights / codes to pop up, when there is absolutely nothing wrong with the sensor or code.
Wow two bad alts in a row? Or is the Aero killing them?
When our 96 Aeros alt went bad the idiot light came on before I replaced it. The light was a picture of a battery that said charge underneath its below the gauges on the left on the same side as the air bag and check engine light.
I replaced ours with a Duralast Gold and no problems here. Before that though I replaced the battery with a Diehard because the stock Motorcraft finally went on us.
It may be blowing the voltage regulator due to a bad ground maybe?
I know that the diode packs can blow if they are subject to overvoltage.
Or you may just have a bad battery and its killing any alt you put in there.

well the battery is brand new, I've got a good ground (0 ohms from alt body to batt neg cable) both alts were tested after i had them in, and they were charging just fine, just not enough.... i have thought about the truck killing them, so i'm going to have the one i pick up this morning tested before i put it in...
Insufficient Voltage generally is due to a faulty Diode Array internally in Alt.
Ya know what else I just remembered ?
I've seen those Buss type [slider] Ign Switches eat charging systems just before they quit, fail or fry. Remember that recall a few years back?
Ya may want to run your VIN thru the OASIS Data Bank at Henrys' drealership & see it your Ign Switch is OEM or if it has already been R&R'd on the recall. It's an NS recall so it does not expire, if I recollect correctly.

went to pick up my third alt from OR this morning, and I aksed them to test it before I left. They hooked it up, and noticed that a couple of wires on their test leads were disconnected. The first thing that went thru my mind was "oh great, they've just trashed 2 perfectly good alternators". He said take it home, put it on, and see what happens. he told me that if it still didn't work, they would refund my money. I brought it home, slapped it in (crossthreading one of the bolts in the process) and lo and behold, the dang thing works! I got everything buttoned up and I'm heading to the in-laws in an hour or so...
