Started getting the motor ready for pull. Looks like my exhaust is gonna need cut off as the bolts are rusted solid. Since I'll be getting all new exhaust, who cares. Anyone thing I'll need a transmission lift to bring it down and back up? Or just use a big jack? Also the 4x4 trans case leaks, can this be rebuilt or do I have to replace it?
You may need to remove the front wheels and drop the front of the truck as low as you can so the engine's oil pan will clear the top of the radiator support. Keep in mind how the trans is being supported and watch for any interference issues there as you lower the front end.
Drain the gear on both the transmission and transfer cases. It will help in not making a mess with the gear oils if the transmission gets sideways for some reason and will lighten the load a bit. When you drain the gear oils, check the color and characteristics of the oil, if the gear oil looks milky - it has water - and there is probably other wear internally and will need to be inspected further.
I have used two floor jacks and have use one floor jack to remove the transmission/ transfer case assembly. If you haven't used a floor jack before to remove the trans/transfer, be very careful and have your assistant be careful. These transmission and transfer cases are very heavy.
Use a transmission jack it will be much safer.
Also the 4x4 trans case leaks, can this be rebuilt or do I have to replace it?
Refer to previous post, paragraph 1. Replace the front and rear out put seals. Drain and replace gear oil with ford manufactured specification gear oil.
Disregard previous post, paragraph 2, got carried away on post.
10 bolts? Does that include the inner fenders as well? I don't know anyone who has done that, but it sounds like a great option for working in the engine compartment...
Ford390gashog is right on the money pull the nose/doghouse.Your life will be much easier,You might even get those exhaust bolts out now that you can get at them. The nose to firewall distance is just too tight to drop a motor and trans in easily without tipping it at crazy angles. If its an automatic throw a new front seal in the trans while you are in there nothing worse than a leak from a 10 dollar part causing you to pull an engine AGAIN!!
