I used to get them a lot as a kid. The doc said it was from being dry and had me use a saline mist. I eventually grew out of the nosebleeds although I did get one a couple of weeks ago at the bar. Thats a whole other thread there. lol
I used to get them quite a bit as a pre-teen/teen. Now I very rarely get them. Looking back, I would say there were two main contributing factors. One, I had some allergies--those are much less now after I did several years of desensitizing allergy shots. Two, I am much better about keeping myself hydrated. I'm almost always drinking something. The advice you hear about 8-10 glasses of water per day is a good STARTING POINT. Double it if your job is quite physical/makes you sweat/you sweat a lot anyway.
I was a bleeder as a kid. Some would argue that I still am a kid, but since I was about 18, I stopped having them. I also took up the obsession of drinking over 100 ounces of water per day, so that helps.
I've been punched in the shnoz quite a few times so have had quite a few bloody noses. I used saline with a high concentration of salt and then shove cotton ***** in to soak up the blood. Pinching your nostrils up at the cartilage helps too. Unless your nose gets bent bad then that's a little irritating. Don't tilt your head back though, it just runs down your throat when you do that.
i used to get em all the time had a few last for over 4 hours ( i got em frequently and getting kicked in the head didnt help) but mostly it was from not hydrating enough.. and i had blood vessels close(abnormally close) to the outer layer of skin and when that skin dried/cracked it was bleed time. so the doc acutally used a laser to cut that spot creating scar tissue and thus fixing that issue and i now only get em everyonce and a while when i dont drink enough and it dries out
so what do you do when it happens? Do you use tissues to soak the blood up or do you lay down and swallow the blood? or do you pinch your nose?
I tried to pinch my nose but I could feel the blood accumulating inside the nose and it's horrible after you are done pinching. Hate seeing so much blood at once.
I usually pack it with tissue. Pressure is the key, so the tissue applies it from inside as well as absorbing the blood. If you're going to pinch it, you have to pinch it up near the bridge of the nose to pinch off the blood vessels, not just pinch the nostrils shut which will allow the nose to...fill up with blood, and not stem the flow.
If you're on aspirin or other blood thinners, don't expect an easy time of getting it stopped.
I keep my head over the sink and find where the bleeding is coming from. then I pinch as hard as I can with a tissue. Usually stops within 5 minutes. Except that one... Junior year in high school... bled for like 15 minutes.
