I use to get 'em alot as a teen, it would just start bleeding out of nowhere, usually two or three during the night. Worse during allergy season, even though I don't suffer from allergies. Nasal sprays will stopp a bleeder almost instantly but you can get addicted to them, thats what happened to me. My nose would start bleeding every couple hours, and last longer. So the doctor caughterized (spelling?) my nose. She took one of those long Qtips, put some kind of acid stuff on it, shoved up my nose for a second, and ran away. I went into convusions and sneezed for about a week straight. Now they are very rare for me.
There for a while I was getting them once a day about 4 times a week. They would last 15 - 30 minutes before stopping. I tried all sorts of spray's and had the vessels cauterized three or four times. Finally had to have surgury to remove some bone and scar tissue. Too many shots to my nose playing sports and growing up I guess. Since then things have been great. I still get them but only about twice a year and they only last a couple of minutes before they are done. Sure is frusterating when they keep coming back over and over.
I caught a side kick to the nose in one of my fights that kinda made my nose explode a little. That was a friggin gusher! I don't know what hurt more though, straightening the broken nose or the back of my head slamming the floor.
One thing that always worked for me was to take a napkin or paper towel or anything like that and tear off a strip about 2 or 3 inches long and maybe 3/8" wide, double it over a few times to make a pad about wide enough to go between your canines and tuck it up under your top lip. For some reason it stopped mine up within a minute or two, and I used to have nosebleeds that would last a half-hour or more when I was younger.
