starting problems

hey all, its been very useful being a member here and im back yet again with yet another problem. my 97 5.4 xlt 2wd seems to wanna act dead when i try and start it. the other day i turned the key and nothing, turned it off then tryed again, fired right up...but with the what seemed to be dead hesitation. my voltage meter in the truck reads 12-14 range i cant really tell because its marked 8-18. What other things should i look for or has anyone been thru this?

not sure if this is your problem, but you might want to start with your alternator and/or starter - you can pull them out and have them checked by an autoparts store.

you may want to check out the starter motor relay and the digital transmission range sensor as well as the ignition switch because they are all part of the starting system.

well i went from simple to complex and ended up changing the starter. who in the hell designed these things. almost 2 hours getting the old one out and a mere 25 min. installing the new one. all in all i saved over $100 though and it was a little experiance.
