1997 Expedition Power Lock Issues
Wife's 1997 Expedition, 5.4, Eddie Bauer, 355,000 miles started having power door lock issues. Push the fob, nothing happened, then door locks went haywire. They actually did fully lock and unlock ( not actuator?), but repeatedly did do until a the door was unlocked with a key. One night my wife apparently tried to use the fob and I theorize the locks operated all night (I didn't observe it) because the battery was dead-dead the next morning. Like no power at all, no dome light, no starter click dead dead. Put charger on it and got it started. Seemed to work fine. Then she did it again without thinking about it and we repeated the dead battery thing. Lately we have been hand-operating the locks cause we're scared to use. The PDL feature anymore. But today the thing is acting like battery dead again. Starts but very slow, and click on radio quit. CEL was on but I checked it and it was a malfunctioning emission vapor thing that goes on all the time. Maybe battery is just to dead to hold a charge? What would cause the door lock thing? No leaks in the windshield we are aware of for the water issue I've heard of.

Have the battery properly tested at Advance Auto (free) or the dealer (free also?). Also pull the fuse for the PDL provided that it doesn't power anything else you need. As for the PDL issue itself, I had the same problem on my '96 Ford Probe a mere 4 years after I bought it. I sold the vehicle without ever tracking it down, but I suspect it was an electrical short. Perhaps a bad ground or relay.
