You can, but the alignment is kind of built into the beams, so when you shorten the springs, the axle swings up forcing the top of your tires inward. It looks really bad, and you chew through tires rather quickly too.

even though it will only be a 1" or 2" drop will i wear out the tires too quickly?
You need an alignment whenever you modify the ride height. How far it's off depends on how bad you mess with it and how lucky you are. The more it's off, the worse it will perform and the harder it will be on your tires. If you drop it 2", it will definitely be noticable.

1983_f100, when that axle raises, the tire bottom will automatically be pushed OUT because the setup is "fixed" in one position where the wheel pivots.
You will wear out the INNER part of the tread quickly as there is more friction at the road surface at those points. Of course the amount and style you drive will have a great affect on the tread wear.
You MIGHT hear the tires "screaming" on tight turns too.
