Just wanted to get some imput. My 78 f-150 doesn't seem to like towing much. I haven't had really any problems with it overheating, but it didn't like the empty car trailer i put behind it the other day. It has a new radiator, fan clutch, thermostat, and water pump. All these have been done with in the last 12k miles. Just trying to get some ideas.
Sorry let me back up. Its a 78 f-150 4x4 351m/c-6 w/ 3.50 gears. 33 x 12.50 tires. 51k original miles. It does have a 190 thermostat in it.
Maybe 1500-2000 lbs trailer. It was fairly sturdly built with a 2 x 8 floor. Its central georgia so its pretty flat.
The only indication i had that it was overheating was the guage. It never did "burb" any coolant that i could tell. I'm going to put a mechanical guage on it soon to know exactly what the temps are.
I was just wondering if anyone had a line on the 351m/400 motors being problematic with overheating. I have heard that before.

Provided there are no defects in the engine there is no reason that a 351m should overheat. You could do a block-check to make sure before you load her up just to be sure.
You might consider a separate transmission cooler though...
