351W Pre Start-up

Hi Guys,

I am finally finishing up my restoration and it is almost time to fire the rebuilt engine up for the first time since installed last summer. Engine is set to 10 deg BTDC and all wires are connected and the distributor is set as close as I can get it. Yes, it has oil in it and coolant. Oil pump was primed last summer.

What else do I need to consider prior to start up, to ensure it goes smoothly?

Thanks for the help.

I would pull the distributor and prime it again, just before initial start-up. All the oil you pumped through last summer has since drained back into the pan, and taken a lot of the assembly lube with it. You would essentially be starting it dry.

You don't say if this is EFI or carbed. If it's carbed and has a mechanical fuel pump, I would fill the float bowl(s) on th carb with gas to eliminate all the cranking you'd have to do to get the gas pumped up. If it has an electrid FP with carb, just give it a few moments of juice to fill the carb. If it's EFI, disregard.

What I like to do to fill carb float bowls is to put a piece of fuel hose on the float bowl vent and put a little gas in a plastic squeeze bottle with a tapered tip (like you find on qt. bottles of gear lube) insert the tip into the other end of the fuel hose and gently squeeze to force gas into the bowl. If it's a Holley you can remove the sight plugs to fill to the proper level, otherwise you have to guess at it. I'll put some in, give the throttle a couple pumps and if there's gas squirting out the acc. pump nozzle, we're good to go.
