Over the weekend, I took a little road trip from Ohio to Texas and back. One the way, had a touch of foul weather and had the wipers on. After they were on steady for a while, I could smell what made me think of burning wires type smell coming from the vents in the dash. I beleive the defroster was also active at the time. I could also hear a click sound coming from the left part of the dash that seemed to be located behind the drop down panel or around the floor area. This would only click a fraction of a second before the DELAY wipers would activate and would not do it all the time. A few hours went by, started to rain again, wipers on and had another burning type smell from the vents.
To sum it up...what is bad? Wiper motor? Still wipes though. Wiring for the motor? Still works!
Run the wipers for a while and see if the wiper motor is getting hot. Then trace the wiring and see if there's anything hot there too.
The motor can get hot because it's not getting enough "juice", as in a bad connection somewhere. Just like a dead battery will cook a starter when you crank on it too long.
Another area to chk is the wiring up to the multifuntion switch running up the steering colum. If you look in the forums there have been some guys also with wires chafing or breaking in that area.
Also listen to the motor to see if it sounds like it is laboring/binding.
