My windshield wipers are fairly sporadic. They make a fairly annoying whining noise and the intermitent speeds only work half of the time. The low and high settings normally work but after a short amount of time it seems like the wipers start getting slower and slower. When I change speeds I can also hear a single click that sounds to be coming from the glove box so I am assuming that has something to do with the wiper control module. Does this sound like the WCM is going bad or would it more likely be something with the wiper motor? Is there an easy way to test it? Thanks.
Hello I'm New to the forum also. I just had my windshield wipers give out on me after doing the same thing you just described. The clicking noise is comming from the intervol govener. I talked with a local ford mechanic and he said 9out of 10 times when the wipers go bad its the motor only. So going against his advice I bought a govener and a motor. I put the govener in hoping it would fix the problem, ( it didn't) and ended up having to replace the motor any way. The only problem I have is the 2 lowest settings on my inermitent wipers don't work but I'm willing to live with it. Hopefully this will help. Oh by the way the govener cost me $85.00 at the ford garage and they are the only ones who have it.
I have a wiper problem too. Whenever i have the wipers on and use the blinkers, it activates the wipers. When the blnker cancel kicks in to shut it off, the wipers go off. Kind of a weird thing. Any experience with this one.
Sounds like your problem is in the multi-function stalk on the column.
I had the same intermittent and "slow" operation on my wipers as well. Turned out that one of the field magnets in the motor had come loose form the motor casing and was dragging against the armature. The motor would heat up to the point that it would overheat the circuit and blow the fuse. Be prepared if you have to replace the motor though. Ford changed the connector on the motor ot some point and in order to replace the motor, you have to wire a new connector into the wiring harness. Not to fear..its included with the new motor when you get it along with instructions for the project
The clicking is the relay that triggers the motor. Its normal and audible. Intermittant settings you will hear the delay relay click just prior to the wipers sweeping each time they cycle.
I'm having a similar problem with my intermitent wipers. I seem to have a few "dead" positions on the turn signal stalk. I disassembled the stalk and cleaned the electrical contacts but still have the dead spots. What is the fix? New WCM? If a new one is $80 bucks I'll just live with it!!!!
The "dead spots" are most likely just that...dead. The interval setting dial on the stalk changes resistance value for the time delay circuit that triggers the relay. As electrical components age, their resistance value changes. My 92 had about three or four settings that were virtually identical in delay time. Another thing to keep inmind is that the delay circuit starts counting all over again every time you change the delay setting. So, if you change the setting rapidly, it may take a few extra seconds for the delay circuit to catch up.
Uhhh, well, short of disassembling the stalk and dealing with the contacts inside or replacing it, not much. Its kind of like the dimmer in your headlamp switch for the dashboard lights...it too will develope dead spots over time. The only reliable fix is a good cleaning or replacement.
