At the present time nothing covers the filter. I will probably make a shield or a housing to cover the filter when I get the chance. (That's the best part of being a sheetmetal guy for the U.S.A.F, knowing how to make just about anything out of metal.)
ahhh another fab flight guy......i was once a fab guy..survival equipment....i talked to a mechanic about these intakes, he said they are basically pointless without getting an exhaust done too. anyone have feedback on that let me know but in the meantime let us know if you gain anything.
I already have a Flowmaster exhaust. All I wanted out of the intake was a deeper sound out of the exhaust. The Expy sounds a whole lot better with it already. I'm not sure if it is going to improve HP or MPG and really not worried if it does or doesn't. I will get the HP and MPG that I want once I get the programmer for it.
If you can actually direct cool air over it you will gain power and mileage. On aircraft when we switch from carb heat to outside air we see a 100 RPM gain. In fact, if we dont see it we know there is something wrong. It's the same principle with auto engines. The guys that run the exposed air cleaner off the top of the carb lose power. Hot air is less dense than cold air. When the air is more dense there is more compression and oxygen present to help do the work.
I have this set up as well, but i don't see a piece that goes behind the filter and under it. It has a strip that goes accross it and it seals to the hood when closed. This piece helps keep out the hot air. I have this same setup but just bought it about a month ago so mybe that piece wasn't available when you bought it.
On a different note has anyone had any problems with a obnoxious loud intake noise through these that tends to happen shortly after it is started. I went through all the clamps to make sure they were tight and not leaking cause the noise is coming form somewhere in this set up. It seems to be the loudest at the filter but that would mean it could be coming form anywhere in the setup. Once warmed up it does not make the noise. When it makes the noise I can make it go away by accelerating the gas pedal a bit and it dissappears.
