Thanks CB9M. And fordboy, it's "Aye Aye, Sergeant". But you'd never heard that because "Aye aye" is a Navy term and Sergeants don't exist in the Navy. Just my two cents on that (big military fan = RangerPilot).
Ok...so the deal is. Do the simple bolt on mods work? Yes. Do they work for much, INDIVIDUALLY? No. Combined together you can get a performance increase, yes there isn't a doubt, there never was. What the big debate was over is whether the simple bolt on stuff was economical. I bought a Flowmaster. Did it give me more HP or Trq? I don't know, I don't care. I just wanted "that famous Flowmaster sound". Rather than getting a CAI, pull the stock air box off and drill some holes in the pre-filter area (below the filter on my Ranger). It will flow more air, therefore getting you the same mod as a CAI (lots of air flow) for no cost. Pull the box and replace it with a cone filter if you want. We settled in the previous thread there was not a desire from the engine for more air however. Remember Ken00's vacuum test? No vacuum at full throttle. Which means the engine is getting all the air it needs, therefore completely negating the usefulness of a CAI. Drill holes. Problem solved.
Supercharge it. If you're man/woman enough, hammer the heck outta the truck and put a big block in there. It's a lot more power. But spending hundreds on a couple of horses, what's the point?

(oh God...here we go again...and I'm all over it again lol...)
"Boys", lets play nice, debates are fun, and informative, but this one just got alittle out of hand, I know, cause i've been in the middle of it. Billy, first off there was mud being slung from both sides, and smart a** coments from you as well as everyone else, there's no saints here gentelmen. Second off, Pilot, I don't know what you've done to your airbox, but 5, 1" holes ain't gonna cut it, I'll explaim to you sometime when I'm not so tired, how to butcher your box, the right way. But really your better off buyiny a cai, or just leaving it alone. Mines only gutted untill AEM makes my stupid cai, that I've been waiting 6 months for them to develope. The only reason I get upset with those one the other side, is because I put the money, time, and energy into modding my engine, and I know how the truck ran stock, verses now, there's noway under the sun, the truck doesn't have 25, to 30 more hp. My quarter mile times tell it, my 265's won't stay gluded to the road in first, and second gear when I nail it. They call it phantom hp, or it's in your head, now thats what puts a slinter up my butt! Here is the list one more time, jba headers, gibson dual sport catback, cai, underdog udp, proform e-fan, and bama chips, also 410 gears, and a 4.0 sohc, Now when you have completed, "said" list of mods, then you can talk all the smack you want. Now, lets all be friends, enjoy are trucks, respect each others views, and help each other where we can Bob, and Billy are both very smart guys , and I know that i will questions for them in the future, Waves and I are on the same page, and poor Pilot, he just tries to help everybody, GOD BLESS HIM!! AS A WISE MAN ONCE SAID.'can;t we all just get along ha ha !!!Talk to ya later fellows.
Wendell.....you wana talk Alamo budy, two threads locked and removed today on this. lol Where ya' been?
PS - Got to get a few miles in some serious deep and fluffy sand friday afternoon. The warmer than normal temps here got the sand dry and deep a little early.
Ok...holes enlarged lol. Now it's just ribbing around a bunch of open gaps...about as free-flowing as I can get it and allow the box to still maintain some structural integrity. I washed the area up though to get the dirt and stuff off. I'll replace the filter once I get the chance.
There's an idea...dyno a cut up airbox against the aftermarket CAI.
"Yeah", I see dead bodies srewn everywhere(OUCH!!!) The next time someone has a duratec 2.3 performance question, we need to get them over to focus fanatics, focaljet, or ranger power sports in a hurry, they thrive on hopping up duratecs. I knew the answer, but you know what happens if you say it here. I love these guys, but it's like thier in the stone age or something, they have no clue what the rest of the modern world is doing. Just a aem cai on my duratec 2.0, with no other mods, was good for 6 hp at the wheels, those duratecs have alot of potental, cosworth is in to them. At anyrate, I started to post lastnight, but got company. I got called back to work last week, wheathers getting nice up here also, so my days are no longer free, but jumped in as soon as I could.I love it, the ranger, that reaches the beaches,"YOU GO BOY"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Indeed, that little 2.3L is good for a lot more than people make it out to be. And everything from the Focus will fit right on best I understand. Is the Focus engine mounted the standard way or transverse?
While healthy converstaion and debates can be good and enjoyable..........
Some people just don't have brains enough not to make waves and can't "let it go" . They instead, in an attempt to win people over, prefer personal attacks via the internet (after all, it's faceless and pretty easy), including attacks on others personal property and other aspects of their "opponent/enemy". Included is making repeated allegations of other folks comments that don't exist (for example, "don't believe in bolt on mods") when such comment has not been made. Planting words in others mouths, said another way. Trying to bring others down in an attempt to bring oneself up when there is no nothing else at hand. The immature, childish behavior is something most mature adults prefer to not listen to; there are far more important things in life to concern onself with .
Pilot, did you rmove the air horn lending to the header panel? Also, remove the plastic insert in the header panel it's self around the opennig, punch as many holes as you can, in all the places you can, also are you running a stock paper filter? Sorry, I'm not good at explaining things sometimes, but I'm trying!
WB - All my Rangers were built or modified specifically for the beach.....cuz' that's where the waves are! No sense having to work it through the sand, I try to make it as easy on my truck as I can afford to.....really would like to get on some 33's and 10" wheels, it would make it sooooo much easier......but that would require some lift OUCH!, and gears..more OUCH!! Going to Big Bend labor day weekend with a small group of guys from here with at least 3 other trucks/jeeps if you or anyone else is game all I know for sure is that weekend so far -

Again, here are independent dyno runs from airbox mods, and it doesn't do a thing!!! Another thing, the stock airbox is designed to pull cool air in, by punching those holes in the airbox, you are pulling hot air, which is less dense, and we all know that HP goes down with an increase in air temp!!!
Here's what I noticed from a K&N, Magnaflow exhaust, and a SuperChips tuner on my F150 (just starting to play with the Ranger).
K&N and Magnaflow "improved" the sound (IMHO) over stock. The only gain I can see is at high rpm (over 3500) and wide open throttle which I rarely run. Maybe a very slight change in towing, but again I like the sound.
The SuperChips tuner on the other hand... firmer shifts, better throttle response, and a 2 mpg improvement! You'll never prove those on the dyno, but they are there and noticable. I added the parts in the above order, so it's impossible for me to say if the tuner would have been as much value without the other two.
Something I have noticed on many forums - those that don't like certain mods really hate those mods. No idea why, doesn't matter and they rarely tell you why, other than to say don't do it. Those that like certain mods, love them. Most can't tell you why, and the same hold true for these guys, they rarely tell you why.
I was on another forum yesterday, a guy was explaining his mods and a problem that he had - including the removal of the tuner and the problem still being there. The first response was "your SuperChips tuner is dumpster material." No explaination. From previous posts, it was obvious the guy just hates tuners, with no explaination, ever.
Bottom line - anyone can post anything on the internet. Unless they are being honest (impossible to know) and posting facts or their experiences you don't have any idea where they come from. Take everything you read with a grain of salt and remember that there are people on the internet that enjoy getting a rise out of you - don't give them the pleasure!
No I got rid of the stock paper filter right after I got the truck...which is good becuase it was incredibly dirty.
I'm in the process of making a heat sheild to keep the aforementioned hot air out of the box. I did remove the baffle on the header panel long ago...seemed kinda stupid that it was there in the first place.
