Does anyone know where you can order Ford special tools from? I am looking for the timing cover installation tool that fits over the crankshaft in place of the harmonic balancer. I already tried using the balancer to align the cover, but it still wouldn't go on straight and now I have a leak. The motor is a 1968 240ci six. Thanks

Do you have the origional tool number from the shop manual? You may need this to see if the tool was upgraded. I think what you want is T88T 6701-A (303-335). It is a combination aligner/seal installer for the 4.9L and will work on most other engines also.
Yes spx-otc same Phone # ask for ford tools

I am curious as to what the tool looks like. I have done a lot of I6 engines including the 240. I also had a 240 in a 70 F100. I know I replaced the timing chain several years back. Never had a special tool, never had a leak. Did you say tool is used to "line up the timing gear cover"?
About 3 years ago I made a tool that worked for my Bronco II. Removed and installed the timeing cover & seal with the engine in the truck. If the timeing cover has not been moved and is centered you do not have to remove and center the cover. No leaks so far. Have not made one for my 302 F 150 engine or 4.0 Aerostar. Bought a 2 1/4 inch ouside diameter PVC pipe end piece. I measured the seal lips opening and came up with the size I needed. Put some light grease or oil on the seal lips. I had to do a little sanding on the outer part so it fit perfectly through the seal lips and not press the seal. I than install the timeing cover with bolts loose. I than wrapped black electrical tape tightly around the shaft the harmonic balancer rides on. This is so my special tool is fairly tight on the shaft like the harmonic balancer is. Insert the tool and center the cover. Tighten the cover down. Remove the tape. Install the balancer. I hope this helps.
