so, i yanked things out from under hood that i dont need for the motor to run. therefore, the ac pump went along with the smog pump. now, with a universal fit cat. (with no air line fittings) or dualing the exhaust with 2 smaller cats.. would i be able to pass? anyone ever pass without the smog pump? the truck's a 1990 F250 7.5L. my emissions test is coming up and i'm a bit nervous. what should i do? thanks in advance :]
Removing the smog pump is going to reduce the CAT's ability to burn off the unburned fuel in the exhaust. Since you removed the SMOG pump I wouldn't think changing CATs, either single or duel would change things much. You might think about trying to make it run a bit lean to try and limit the amount of unburned fuel. I'm not sure how things work in CA, but I would go to an garage that can do a preliminary SMOG test for you so you can see if it will pass. If it doesn't, you might think about putting that SMOG pump back on for the test. If I recall, during a visual inspection if the inspector see's you have altered your SMOG eguipment you will automatically fail the test.
everything that had to do with the smog pump is gone so an inspector wouldn't know that there use to be one there. when i replace the factory cat with a universal fit one that doesn't have the fittings where the smog pump would hook to, it'd be more likely they wouldnt know a smog pump was there. now, how would i go about making the motor run lean? outta curiosity, i've got an MSD 6A ignition hooked up along with the MSD TFI blaster coild, would this help at all?
retard the timing.. hmm??? i actually heard something about that. how would i go about getting that done? or could it be done by myself? or should i give over to a pro? msd ignition and retarding the timing... i wonder if that would do the trick
Retarding the timing as much as possible without getting the engine to ping would be helpful. if you had an adjustable fuel pressure regulator you might be able to reduce the fuel pressure a bit from what it is now which would help reduce the amount of fuel being pushed into the engine. These all probably would help, but there is no way of knowing for sure without getting it tested. Better ignition components, coil, distributor would also help.
unless you put it there, you're not going to have one. It's a little aluminum saucer shaped device mounted on the back of the engine near the firewall.
Would picking up another cheap cat putting it on temporarily help? How often do they do these emission tests in CA. I would highly doubt it would pass especially the big 460
Where I live in Canada is a joke for emmision testing. Nobody ever lifts the hood except me, or when a vehicle needs a safety (transferring names) and even then there's no emmision testing. It's just a visual check for auto's after 94 to see if they have a cat.
Retarding the timing is not going to help emissions at all - leave it at the factory setting. Two aftermarket cats should clean up the exhaust enough to get past smog, but I don't know how strict your tests are. You would most likely fail visual, especially in California.
Yeah, the Californians are ***** about the smog crap. But I wouldn't know, I always had pre-smog cars while I lived there as far as I'm concerned, it's the only way to go. All I can say is, good luck!
sounds good :] dualing the exhaust with two cats.. i hope it works. butbutbut! WOO! i found out my cousin's boyfriend that works at the place that has always done my exhaust.. he also works where they smog hehehe woohoo for illegal smog checks and passings! woo! i'm stoked i'm gonna pass with flying colors!
