Starting Problems

I have a 71 F100 with intermitant starting problems. It has something to do with starter circuit. Sometimes the starter cranks just fine and other times it doesn't and other times it cranks just enough to get it started.

I replaced the starter, solenoid, all the cables and have had the battery checked. And I have cleaned and tightened all the connections. I have noticed that when it doesn't start, the connection at the solenoid from the battery is hot enough to melt the insulation.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the help.

you might have a ground problem at the solenoid (not in the cable)
check how it mounts see if there is metal 2 metal contact
thats what happend on mine
just a thought?

If you don't have a ground strap between the block and firewall/body put one on( the bigger the better) If you have one check it very well. I had the exact same problem and went through the same steps you have only to find out that the strap was missing. A $2.00 strap could have saved a lot of time and money.

You didn't say what engine you have. A battery that is fine for starting a 302 will not work on my 390.

I don't remember the battery specs but it was made for trucks. It is larger then the typical Ford battery. I made a new battery tray out of 1/8 steel for the bottom with 1" high steel around the sides. Since I put that in, I haven't had any starting problems. I also use welding cable for the battery cables.
