Does any one have a good exploded view of this tranny. My chiltons manual pic is so bad i am unabe to tell the direction of the gear teeth. I think I have everything together correctly, but i just want to make sure, with out finding out the hard way. I posted this in the transmission section, but i don't think many people look there.
The '72 CD-ROM manual that you can buy on this site has nice detailed drawings of it. They give it 13 pages of coverage.

The ford parts book has a good exploded view for any year from at least 66-mid 80's. I believe I also saw it this weekend on a web page when I did a search for new process 435. I am in the process of rebuilding my 435 also. which gears are you in question about.
Did you have to shim your syncro? It looks like I have to shim my syncor .040 from where it was before to get the required .043-.053 clearance between the syncro plate and third gear. I can't figure out why it is not within spec since I did not change the gears or syncros. The syncro plates look good and loosing .040" on them does not seem realistic.
I just pulled apart a 2wd 435 last night, it will go back together tonight with the other tail shaft. The 435 from the 4x4 is still in my rig. The 2wd np only had 40k on it and was good and tight. The clearances were fine on evrything i pulled apart. Im keeping my fingers crossed that the shaft from the other tranny won't have any special needs, or cause any problems. This is my first, so im taking it pretty slow.
More than likely you will be ok on your tail shaft. I did the same thing to a BW T18-A trans a while back and everything worked great. The 435 is pretty much the same design. I couldn't imagine why the shafts would be different other than length.
Just learned this the hard way last night. The Cases are different from my 2wd to 4wd. The mounting holes on the back are a different configuration. The 2wd are 4 holes in a square, the 4wd case has 4 holes in a trapezoid.
Wish i had noticed this before I had it in place and was trying to bolt up the transfer case. I knew something was wrong when the transmission just slid into place without a problem. And then the transfer case just slid on the output shaft. It was just too good to be true.
After a few choice words, I pulled it all out and swaped the gears and tailshaft into the other case. What a pain.
Tonight I will again install the transmission and transfer case into old yeller. Still feel stupid.
