Direct swap? 428.

Interestingly, some 360 blocks have 428 cylinder wall cores and will take the 428's 4.130" cylinder bore. With the appropriate pistons, crankshaft, and rods you'd be able to turn a 360 into a 428.

Does the 454 slip under the wire as it can be built with a 427 block and 428 crank?

I had one for 6 years long ago, made them chebbie owners smile until they saw Mr. Dizzy in front.
Wasn't there a 494" FE used by Ford in the GT40 or the Can AM car years ago?

no the 494 was a 385 series engine based on the Boss 429, or atleast the only ones I have ever seen were.

There was the FE 482 starlifter. Based on a custom .100 over 406 crossbolted block with a 4.3 billet steel crank. Pretty sure Holman Moody built. This was a prototype for the proposed 8 liter limit NASCAR and NHRA back in 62. Think it ran at the salt flats also for some high speed testing. NASCAR settled on 7 liters and the 482 project dropped. The 427 was developed and the rest history.

Monster, that 494 Can Am motor was the 385 series motor. There was a 492 that I was told used Ford FE parts by a old time Can Am racer I was talking with today. It would spin bearings and kick rods pushed too hard back then.
I saw an add where 429 Shotgun motors for $30K up to a complete 494 for $125K, a large sum.

25 or 30 years ago I had a "Ford Performance" book that I believe was written by Pah Ganahl. (Sp?) In it, it claimed it was 385 based, but if memory serves me right, it showed no pictures (of course) and gave nothing more than a brief paragraph description of it.
