I have found a 72 f100 lwb with 97k original miles on it for sale. It has a 360, with auto tranny, and the explorer trim package. The truck runs and has some new parts but it has no title. The guy that has it bought it from someone else without the title. He tried to get one but never got all of the paper work done. He is asking 500 bucks for it and it would be worth more than that for the parts from it.
I was wondering if anyone has gone through the process of replacing a lost title and what is involved.
I would offer him $250-300.00 for the truck, and use it for parts, because with out the title, it isn't worth more. If it was owned by someone that just couldn't find it, it is one thing, but this could be stolen and taken away from you if found to be so. That is why there are titles.
Find another truck for a driver.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
I'd take the VIN number and run it through the DMV to see if it was stolen BEFORE you buy the truck. If not, buy it, then apply for a lost title. But if all you want it for is parts, Don't even worry about it. Just buy it and park it out back.
Hey thanks for the info. I'll get the vin and try that. This truck is too good just to use for parts. But it may come to that if it is too much trouble to get a title.
I would tell him you will buy it on the condition that you don't give him any money until you get the title search back. It varies from state to state but I think it is 10$ or there about here to apply for the lost title. You could even write up a promisary note stating that you will buy it if he applies for the lost title, and if it comes back clear you will buy it for X amount of dollars. Or you will pay for the title search but if it comes back unclear he will pay you back for it? I have a car without a title, and it has been parked on a major road in front of my house with no problems. Usually lost titles come from unorganixed owners like myself..LOL. But without the title the seller is in a bind as most people won't purchase the vehicle. Just my thought.
Hey thanks for all of the info. I got the vin number off of the plate on the door today and I'm going to check on it on Monday. This guy is in no hurry to sell. He said that he had planned on restoring the truck but just didn't have the time and money to do so. He said that he would rather sell it to someone that would be able to do something with it.
I bought my 71 F-100 here in Alabama and back then they didn't even have titles on vehicles. When I went to register it in my name, all the lady asked me was if I had a receipt from the guy I bought it from.
Didn't seem right as I used to own a 63 Fury, and it had a title.... but that was in IL. That could be the difference. There are about 15 years behind the power curve here in Montgomery....
