heater question

With the heater turned off there sure seems to be a lot of hot air coming through. I adjusted the hot water vavle and it helped a little, but still a lot of hot air.

Is there a problem? And if there is how do you cure it?

Thanks

Do you run headers on your truck?

I bought a plastic control valve and it doesn't seem to shut the water off when closed. Or when open.

Nope, no headers. The hot air comes through the heater. When I adjusted the wate valve the air wasn't as hot but a pretty good draft comes through. I looked inside the duct and the vents seem to move the way they should. When I open the right vent it stops a lot of the hot air coming out of the heater vent.

I think what ever is supposed to stop the air from entering the heated when in the off position is the problem, but I don't know what or where it is.

Just wondering, my truck makes a lot of heat as well. I know adding insulation could help. I'll get around to it one day.

Mine actually has hot air flowing out of the floor heater vent. More than just engine or road heat.

Even with the heat set to low and the fan off I still get heat coming from the floor vent so I just open the fender vents and windows and deal with it. I figure that short of not having a heater at all, that's about the best compromise I've come up with. Crew comfort was down the priority list for these old rigs and since I wan't to keep it as stock as possible, that's just something I'll live with.

Thanks Vern, I guess everything is the way it was supposed to be. A bit tacky, but I think I will stuff the floor vent with something to block the air flow. On a hot day I really don't care for "extra" hot air coming in.

Thanks or the replys.

The heat control doors in the box don't seal very well but if there was no coolant going thrugh the core all you should get is ambient temp. Try pinching off one of the hoses to be shure there is no flow and see how that is.

Is there even a heat control door? I was kind of under the impression that the only thing blocking off the heat in these rigs was the valve in the heater hose.

FWIW, I have a new plastic valve in my truck, and I get the "heat leakage" too. In Summer, I just do like Vern69 and open everything up.

There should be a valve in the heater hose going to the heater core. I believe it is the hot/cold control that opens and closes this valve. Sometimes the wire cable will bend and they won't shut completely. I have popped the cable off and closed them by hand. You just have to remember to open it back up in the fall.

I did adjust the cable that opens and closes the water valve, helped but didn't cure it. i would like to stop the flow of air.

Maybe thats why you see soo many older vehicles with manual water shut off valves in the heater hoses.

I know my '71 would still put out some heat with the valve all the way closed. However my '70 & '72 wouldn't. Maybe the shut off valve is worn and some hot water gets through.
