I have a 1977 F-600 U-haul. It has the 359HD in it with a 4 speed standard tranny. I have found a 1976 F-700 with a 390 and a factory Clark 5 speed in a junkyard. Would the Clark help my top end out on the interstate? What are the final drive ratios? And what would a good Clark 5 speed cost?
I did a search and found the Clark trannies come in many different versions and gear ratios. So I do not know what you would have, but if 5th gear was 1 to 1, there would be no difference in interstate speed.
If the Clark tranny has a lower 1st gear, then they possibly might have put a higher speed rear in the 5 speed truck, which would help interstate speed if you swapped the rear too.
F-61, there ARE overdrive Clarks out there, but I never found one. Both of my Clarks are 285Vs, with the following ratios 6.99/4.35/2.25/1.47/1.00. So, having a 5 speed in and of itself won't do anything for you on the highway. But if you were to change the axle gears or run taller tires, that would help, and the lower 1st gear will allow you to still have plenty of pulling power at takeoff. Plus, I think the ratios in most truck 4 spds are too far apart, and the 5 speed's closer gearing makes the truck more pleasant to drive. I paid 250$ and got my Clark, the FT bell and clutch and flywheel and starter and throwout fork and everything. I think the clark is the best tranny out there for FE or FT powered truckers, and don't understand why we don't see tham more often. DinosaurFan, @ work on lunch......
285V Clark.... Where is the ID tag on a clark? And your post about the price is $20 cheaper than the one I was quoted. So a Clark upgrade is a good start. Thanks...
It is a U-haul and probably never gonna haul alot of weight compared to a flatbed or logging truck. So my question is what gears do I need to shoot for? I have a 6 lug axle and 5x15 drum brakes. Probably an eaton or is it a rockwell? Don't know much about this big stuff. Jason in TN.
