I have a '77 F150 that has trouble with the engine shutting off when first put into drive. I have an electric choke that's not hooked up and the choke is just left wide open.
It starts in park with a little bit of trouble but whenever i shift into drive it moves about a foot and then the engine cuts out.
What could be the problem and what can I do to fix it.
its more than just the choke...by all means fix it if its not working, but chokes are only needed on a cold engine to keep it running for the first few minutes, then the choke should be open.....something else is causing it to die, start with the choke, then give it a full tune-up (plugs, wires, cap and rotor), oil and filter change (all filters that is) and check your timing....see if there is any change in performance...if the problem is still there you can go into finding out if its a fuel or ignition problem...but until the essentials are taken care of its all guessing games...
Have the same problem, I just messed with the carb and got it to stop.
I have the carb running at a higher rpm, I did it by having someone put it into drive and holding the brake, then adjust the carb till it sounds smooth, and not like it's going to die.
