I poured gas down into the carb on my 78 351m and it starts for about 3 seconds and then wont' start again unless I pour more gas down into the carb. There are two spots on the back of the carb, one looks like vacum and other gas. How can I check if the fuel pump is running? any tips?
If the fuel pump is running it will draw/push fuel out of a gas can IF if is primed. You can most likely fit a good size can down there too without doing anything too special. You need to first check the fuel passages to make sure they are not blocked. Also to note. In 2 of the 76-78 F250's I have seen there was a tear in the hose between the tank and the steel line that runs up the frame. This caused serious confusion while blowing the hose back from the pump, becuase I could hear the air coming out, I thought it was clear. Two fuel pumps and much monitoring of this site later it really was only a $1.00 section of hose and clamps. A friend had the same problem, he went right to it and found the tear. If you can blow the hose clear and know that it is not blocked/intact you are most likely buying a pump.
I switched out to an electric to prevent the commom blow-by that occurs with the pump passing fuel to the case. A little more but I think worth it.

Well it seems part of the problem is my exhaust on the passenger side is spitting out anti-freeze and oil. Time for a rebuild anyway. Last time it kicked over it had a small backfire, so I'm guessing my dizzy is probably off as well. I'll check the lines and pump. Thanks guys!
Well look at it this way, if you just let it run out of oil and anti-freeze, it wont try to burn it anymore. Wait! That only applies to the inline 6 engine.
Well have fun with that 351m. I just finished a 400 and it runs like a champ. Word of advice, don't mess with the bottom end much. Stick with the carb, intake, cam and rockers. That bottom is happier just the way it is.
