Steering Columns

Can anyone tell me if all 48-52 F Series steering columns are the same? I have been told both yes and no. I would like to use a 49 F6 in a 52 F1 if it will bolt in with no problems. Thanks for your help. Also, if someone can explain to me in plain english how to open private messages that would be cool. I guess I am too thick to understand the info provided by the site.

thanks,

As to steering columns for the F1 and such, not a clue. I have a 56.

For Private messaging, go to the "User CP" tab in the blue bar at the top of the forum page. Click that and the drop down menu will have private message info like send, view and track them.

The F-1 steering box is unique I believe. Others should chime in. I have sent you a pm.

A couple suppliers list the steering shaft and worm gear to measure 43 23/32 inches long for the 1948-52 F-1. Hopefully you can measure the unit from the F-6. I hope this helps.

without actually measuring yet, I'd guess the steering column may be different as the frame heights are different between F6's and F1's

I've always heard the F1 - F3 used the same Gemmer 3 steering box. F6 would have been something much more heavy duty. Even if the overall length is the same you'll be fabbing something for the pitman arm and drag link connection as your sector shaft will be larger.

I was also wondering about the F1 vs the F3 Steering box and column, has anyone verified that the F-1 & F3 use the same box and column????

Mtflat; you mean that the sector shaft would be larger on the F6 box not on the F-3 box?? if the f1 & f3 are the same? if I follow you correctly?

Thanks
Josh

Edit:
sorry I guess I didn't search long enough!!1
looks like the concensus is that the f1- f3 are the same duh.....

The shaft from the steering wheel down to the top of the box is the same from F-1 to F-6. It is the worm gear on the bottom of the shaft that is different on the F-1 than all the others. The gear ratio on the F-2/F-6 boxes is much slower than an F-1 box. It was popular in the old days to use F-2 and up boxes on a half ton because it gave the illusion of "power steering" on the smaller truck. Tom

Ford doesn't agree with you, and neither do I.

For many years, I rebuilt dozens of these gearboxes, and sold 100's of these parts to customers and Ford obsolete parts dealers when the parts were still available from Ford.

Wellll......., I got the breaking points wrong but basicly what I said was true. I've seen the big truck steering colums with very minor modification used on the smaller trucks a number of times to get the softer gear ratio. The shaft diameter and steering wheel splines are the same up to F-6. Tom
