For those of you who've got those lifted up trucks, i've found and easy solution to getting up and working on the engines. simply take your work bench (if it is at the end of your garage) and naile up some boards ladder style inbetween the legs. Then pull your truck up to the workbench, climb up. cheaper than buying a wobbly stool.
I can't count how many times those damn milk crates have slipped out from under my tippy toes at the worst times. you should see the nasty scar on my chin
I have a couple "stands" I use to get up to work under the hood of my trucks. One is an old aluminum Budd 22" truck rim. Works out nice, doesn't slide around and isn't real heavy. Also have an old bathtub I use for the same thing. It's one of those light stamped sheet metal ones. Turn it upside down and you have a nice wide work platform you don't have to move around much. I too have taken quite a few spills off of milk crates and 5 gallon buckets!
I have a step that I made that hooks on the tire from back in the day when I had to work on B model Macks and White 9000s worked pretty good ,,,,Thank God everything has a glass flip nose on it now
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-Mar-02 AT 04:24 AM (EST)]I've seen people go as far as letting all the air out of the front tires and placing a floor jack under the rear axle and jacking it up to a degree. It brings the nose down considerably so you can work without stools, buckets, etc.
I saw a REALLY neat product in a off-road magazine. It is a license plate bracket that folds down into a stepping platform. It's sturdy and has diamond plating on the step side to prevent foot slipping. Just fold it up when done using it and it looks just like a normal license plate bracket and yes it does hold a tag on the front side. Just figured yall would like to look into it, I know I'm considering buying one for my lifted 78 F250!!!!!

.:-X23 I bought a similar one from Jc Whitney and it did not last long. It works by having a tight fit with the frame to keep it in place as a licence plate display. When you fold it down and use it for a step, you slowly start warping the center andeventually loose that tight fit.
In less than 6 months my license plat would not stay upright.
