i have a 1975 ford f250 with 460/c6, ok my quistion is, connected with a belt to my fan, theres a thing that looks like a alternater, but my alternater is on my left side, this is on my right, it has a dipstick that is dry to the bone and on it reads, check when oil is hot, and on the other side says only use automatic transmission fluid, i was thinking it was my power steering because it looks simamler to the ones in my previos cars, but my power steering works fine, so im unsure what it is, im concerned because it needs fluid, but im sure i dont use transmission fluid like it says on the dip stick because it is not my transmission.
It IS your power steering pump and it DOES use ATF, just like it says. Why would you doubt the instructions on the dip stick? Top it off before your pump fails. Use Type F auto trans fluid.
It's your power steering pump. Follow the lines off the back to your steering gear. Definately add some fluid and find the leak. If it's that low it probably leaked out somewhere. Also, sometimes PS fluid is clear.
Good luck.
He stated on his right side, which means he was looking at the truck. The alt. would be on his left side and yes it is the power steering pump on the right side that shares the belt with the waterpump/fan. It is just low enough that it isn't on the stick, but still abouve the sucking air stage. Just top it off to the full line when hot with ATF and you should be fine.
yeah my dip stick had a little bit of what seemed to be black oil, i had no problems with the steering and had no noise, i questioned the dipstick because when i bought the truck it had 5 different color body panels but in good shape, and the old mechanic said it was pieced from 5 different trucks and it was not the original motor, but its was for $500.00 bucks, now the trucks 1 color and looks good, but now i am pretty sure that the transmission is slipping.
