While I am still trying to fix the driver's door lock, I got an idea to put a keyless entry system. I might get a more complex remote start or even alarm system if the price is right.
It's 96 XLT with 351, powier doors and windows. I didn't get the remotes with it and have no idea if there is a receiver already in or not (I would guess no).
I would also like to be able to remotly lower the tailgate window (it does have the dash switch but it's not really convenient to use it).
I know that some of the folks here have already done it. I am just looking for some good advice about partiular brand, necessary parts and possible write-up.
Don't care for given brand or fancy LCD, just want it to be solid and work properly
Some of the questions I have are:
1. What brand/model should I go with for keyless entry and possibly for remote start or whole alarm package?
2. Is trunk or AUX button on them sufficient to be able to wire it for tailgate window or it has to be an expandable receiver with optional window module?
3. If additional module(s) are needed, what exatly do I have to get?
Thanks for help. I have searched for solution but I couldn't find a complete answer.
Well to start with, i'm pretty sure your 96 should allready have the stock keyless entry system. You can get new remotes on ebay for it and there is a proceedure for programing them for your vehicle. I'm not sure what that proceedure is but i'm sure someone will be able to answer that. If you decide to get an aftermarket alarm/remote start/keyless entry/remote windows ect ect ect...system just know that you you will need a module in addition to what add-on modules you plan to use to bypass the stock keyless entry. Whatever you do don't try to cut the stock sytem out and splice into it, that will just make a huge mess. Also I'd recommend having the system installed, unless you are familiar with relays and 5wire reverse polarity switches. I installed my own sytem on my 93 (with no factory keyless) but i have some experience. Don't take this the wrong way, but from the questions you asked I wouldn't recommend trying to do this yourself just yet.
I know I sounded pretty noobish but I am sure I can tackle it. It will probably take a lot of time, cursing and sweat but I don't have $$ to pay for installation. I have dealt with much worse situations so I believe in myself
Well in that case i would recommend going to the web sites of the different manufactures and checking to see what kinds of add on modules they have. When you pick your brand you can start with the basic alarm, then later add the window module and whatever you want. Also don't forget when looking for a brand that they make the stock keyless bypass module.
It seems that I do some kind of security system under the steering column.
There is blue box with some Ford numbers (no idea what it is) and something called "Alpine mobile security system SEC 8028". Also, there is Apline siren under the hood.
Any idea what exactly it is and how to deal with that, since I don't have remotes?
Looks like you allready have an aftermarket alarm. I'd look into getting some new remotes for it. I'd redo the install job too. The alarm module needs to be tucked away better than that or its useless
Yeah, it looks like I have 2 sysytems here. And no idea if either of them works. Even If I add an aftermarket, universal remotes ($30+ a piece), I cannot be sure it will work. AS You already know, Ford factory remotes sell for $70 and Alpine ones for $50+ a piece. It just doesn't make sense.
Instead of spending $60+ on 2 remotes, I might as well get one new, working and warrantied system.
The only problem that remains here is, how do I rip 2 systems out and still be able to put another one in. I hope they do share some wiring and I am not ripping 2 completely separate circuits.
I don't know where you are going to buy your alarm at but most of the places I know of include or for very little extra will install it and with now three systems in there I say spend the extra money have a cup of coffee and let someone else do it because it can be such a pain.
Few notes, I believe the blue box is part of the airbag system, and I do not see factory keyless entry (it would be next tto the blue box). As far as I know the broncos never came with a factory alarm, but i do know a few had an aftermarket alarm such as Avital installed at the dealer. My 96 you can see the corner of the blue box and the factory system.
Thanks for Your input, Screwy. I hoped I will get response from an expert like You (Steve83 confirmed it too on other forum). Before I go any further, I will make sure there is no factory unit there.
I guess it will make it much easier now. With one system in, my choice would be to get couple generic programmable remotes for it or removal/new sytem in.
Alpine reviews were not that good. For price of 2 remotes (~$50) I might get another system (not alarm but remote start or just keyless entry) with warranty and instructions which should make hooking up the tailgate window easier.
I don't know where exactly the factory keyless is, as mine doesn't have it, however I believe most if not all of the 94-96 models did have factory keyless entry (not to be confused with an actual alarm). As I have said you must leave that factory keyless module in and use a bypass module to convert the outputs from the new alarm into compatable inputs to rhe factory keyless module. If You simply hack the factory keyless out of the dash you will create a wiring nightmare for yourself and possibly set your wiring on fire the first time you try to lock the doors. I have no idea what the blue box is, (mine doesn't have it) but I would suggest you find oout before doing anything so you don't accidently deploy your airbag.......
Sorry, I don’t get around here as much as I used too. Steve83 is a smart man, used to post here a few years back. In regards to keyless entry: If you don’t have a factory unit I wouldn’t think the wiring would be there, so that’s out. As far as the alpine unit, it depends on what you have to spend, if it were me I’d replace it (heck half the wiring is already done) but if you want to keep it, give it a once over, make sure it works properly and you can get and program the remotes for it. In regards to the rear window: This was something even I speculated about when I had my truck. Yes an aux would be enough, but you would need to create a system of relays and switches if you wanted it to be auto up and down, otherwise the aux would only be good for a one way trip, up or down, unless of course you found a system with 2 aux’s and wired one for up and one for down… but this could be a problem because you would need a way of interlocking the directions otherwise you could bump both up and down at the same time and short something out. An optional window module might be a better solution here; it would depend on the capabilities of the module. Anyway you look at it, it’s going to take electrical knowledge and maybe even the ability to fabricate brackets. I think the rav4? Not for sure on model, had factory remote window operation.
