This is my first post, as all the issues I have had with my 04 FX4 (Extended Cab) with 30,000 miles have been covered in other posts. So, here is my problem, when I pass a vehicle(s) on a 2 lane road, the truck often gets to 90-95 mph, when I finish passing and let off the throttle, there is a funny vibration that resonates through the entire truck. I cannot even begin to figure out where this originating. Of course the dealer here says they cannot attempt to recreate this as it is in excess of the posted speed limit and I would have to live with it. This vibration does not occur under 85 mph.
This truck has had previous vibration issues that the dealer has taken care of previously, replacing the rotors, greasing the yoke, doing multipe alignments and wheel balances (though this never seems to cure it 100%).
One last question, I was going to install the 2" autospring leveling kit and get the 33" Toyo Open Country tires for this, are the Toyo's a decent tire for this? Will they be quiet at highway speeds, while getting good traction off-road, where my truck does spend some time.
I started to say it sounds like warped front brake rotors, but after re-reading your post it sounds like it's happening even if you aren't using the brakes. In which case it sounds more like a tranmission issue but without more info I can't be sure. Can you tell if it's happening in a certain gear or no matter what gear the truck is in?
When I think about it, the truck normally downshifts out of overdrive while I am passing, once the pass is complete, I let off the throttle and the truck upshifts into overdrive while I am coasting down to about 75 mph. When the truck is slowing and hits 85 mph, the vibration goes away. I am agreeing that it is most likely driveline/transmission, but, what is a good way to test?
Take it to a different dealer and lie! Tell them the problem is happening at legal speeds and that you think it's a maybe transmission problem. Ask them to hook it up to their diagnostic computer and run a computer check on the transmision and just see if anything comes up. Can't hurt-it's free and it may turn up something plus the new dealer may be more helpful than the first one. It's a start!
I remember when I had my 01 F150 up at about 95mph the entire truck started vibrating and shaking. Isn't there a speed limiter on the truck that starts to shut things down when we reach high speeds. I think thats what caused my vibration.

Hey Dave
I have the same problem as you. Acceleration and cruise there is a slight vibration over 80 MPH. Let off the gas at over 80 MPH and the vibration is very pronounced. I can feel it through the gas pedal and throughout the truck. Here is where it gets interesting. I never had this problem until 3 weeks ago when I had 4.10 gears installed on my truck (stock ring and pinion was 3.73 Limited Slip). My mechanic swears there is nothing inside the "pumpkin" that can vibrate. I am currently working with the shop on this and I will post my findings.
At those speeds, if you still have the ford oem tires on the truck you could be nearing tire failure. As we all know the tires that ford puts on these trucks as OEM equipment are marginal at best. Thats why they have a speed limiter built in set to 99 mph or so.
Thanks for all the input. I talked to the Ford dealer Service manager again and told him I was going to get new tires, an alignment, etc. and if there was anything out of the norm for vibration (once the tire shop ensures it is not tire or alignment related), or anything else, after I get this work done, He will be seeing quite a bit of the truck and myself until everything is resolved. The Ford dealer is always blaming the tires or alignment in my area for my trucks problems, so, I will take away any excuse he has.
Again thanks for your input and this site is excellent for useful information.
