I am looking at installing a 6.9 and C-6 trans out of a 87 f-250 in to a 28foot argosy motorhome. It will replace a Chevt 454 and turbo 400 trans. What I would like to know is the weight of a 6.9 with all the goodies bolted to it. Just in the planning stage going to look at the RV tomorrow. Not wanting to overload the chassis, by the way is a P-30 with airbags and 19.5 tires. But diesel is the only way to go!
slow-canoe, Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.
The engine is in the 1000 pound range alone.
Coupele of hundred pounds for the starter, alternator, power steering pump, vacuum pump and AC compressor. Full dress I would say you are looking at 1150 or 1200 pounds total.
Tranny I would guess at 200 pounds in running form, but my auto trans knowledge is limited at best.
Hmm, for an Auto tranny, I would guess closer to 300 pounds... But, I am making my guess based on a half ton chevy tranny out of a 1979 with full time 4x4 that my dad and I replaced the torque converter on years ago. I just remember that the crappy little scissor jack that he rented to lower it almost gave way under it (the load was not really easy to properly center and it leaned sideways at an awkward, and what I thought a dangerous, angle). And it was a real bear to get it back in with that same jack after we did the repairs. I had a relatively difficult time physically moving the thing around and at the time I weighed in at about 240lbs and was much younger.
I still give my Dad grief over that jack he rented to this day (which is almost 18 years later).
Hey I'm going to be doing the same thing, I found a 27 ft Allegro with a bad 454, they also use the p30 with air bags. I have a 94 7.3 to put in it. Is was guessing that the diesel combo can't be much more than a couple hundred pounds different. Unfortunatly I haven.t fond the time to get the project started yet. I'm sure the camper is full of mice by now its been sitting for over a year. Actually I now exactly how long its been sitting, the wife keeps reminding me, lol. When you get the project started give us progress reports so I can see what I'm up against good luck
