i have a 1988 F250 7.3 with a banks sidewinder. i recently tore it down to the turbo to find out what was causeing surges/lake of boost. when i finished i took it out and i was getting boost. but it wouldnt shift into third. (my bad i pulled off a vacum line on accident) i took it into the shop so they could track it down. they pulled off my air box and on the way home i didnt get any boost. even when i was reciving boost I wasnt all that happy with proformance. . so my question is can i get a turbo from some one other than banks that is bigger and better. i would prefer one that i can basicly drop in. ive looked and havent been able to find any.
if they pulled off the airbox, i bet they did not reconnect the charge line properly. do you have a boost gauge on it?? is it blowing black smoke?? my banks sidewinder pushes 5 lbs with muffler on it , and 13-15 lbs with no muffler. it will also smoke the 36 inch tires if i stand on it
no i dont have a boost gauge on it but will hopefully in the next month or so. i checked around to all the seals that i could and didnt find any thing that looked like it may leak.
the charge line from turbo to air plenum is aproxamatly 2 inches in diameter, and 3 inches long. it is almost under the air box, and a real bear to got on properly.
May I ask what you will do with this old turbo if you do decide to get a new one??? Ive been looking for a used banks, something i can rebuild so if you do end up tossing it I might just buy it from you if the price is reasonable. Even though i want it, Im willing to save you some money on getting a new one. Have you opened the turbo up at all? If youve done everything on the outside, and still no boost, you might want to check the inside. Ive seen turbos with barely anything left on the turbine wheel, so this could very well be your case. You could also have bad bearings or sumthing, causing the turbo to slow itself down not giving you boost. Sometimes it is cheaper to rebuild the turbo then to buy a new kit, just a suggestion!
