my buddy just bought a 85 chebby 2500 2wd 350 4brrl with 400 turbo tranny and a 14 bolt rear with unknown gears. NOW he wants to hookem up my truck is a 78 f150 4x4 with 351 c6 and a 9in now the only thing is my truck has to stay is 2by. my 9 in has 3.50 gears(open) and is turnin 35in tires(this is the only part that concerns me low wheelspeed)the only other changes on my truck to date is the duals with headers and pipes with 2 flowmaster 50 series. this will be on dirt and i know my tires will get way better hookup. so how will it turnout?
just wonderin
btw id prolly throw a rod to beat a chebby lol but id win by damn.
If you have to stay in 2x4, this will be close. As krewat mentioned, traction is key here, not power. Get some weight in the truck if allowed. Ease into it. Heck, see if you can stay on your brakes long enough to get him spinning.
Keep in mind that this type of game can be pretty tough on the truck, so don't be surprised if one or both of you break something.
I'll bet on the Chevy. My guess is that you will wheel hop and break something... and I think the older Chevys get better traction anyway, especially if they have the all-too-common Gov-Lock rear locking differential.
It's hard to guess the outcome without considering a few more variables like tire tread design and hitch height. If your truck is lifted, your hitch will be higher, meaning your truck will be pulling up on his truck and his truck and his will be pulling down on yours... meaning more traction for you and less for him.
if its hard packed dirt...the person with th emost weight on the back tires/bite will win. unless you hold the brake until he start spinning, you will porlly loose because the stock 3" blocks in the back of your truck will cause some pretty good wheelhop is you start spinning
I had 35" with a 400 so I think I know what your talking about...In 2 wheel I couldnt back over a 12" curb...The combo of gear and drivetrain is only fun at a rolling start...Dont know who will win this one...If it was in dirt Id raise the tire pressure to 40lbs..And cheat and yank a half second early...Get the Bronco a Buck.....All I can say is I changed my motor to a 460....Dont have that problem anymore
Mine would have needed air pressure to get the ball rolling..If I did mine from a dead start good chance the tires would never move...400ci wasnt too peppy................... I would believe Cheby would go..And with your spinning would pull the Cheb backwards...Already have the edge than..35lbs min...
