ive been having terrible carb problems with my 1970 240 1bbl truck. Ive tried 3 carbs so far. 2 of them are off of '71 or '72 trucks and they both have bad hesitations in them. i have change the accelerator pumps in all of them. The other carb is the original off of the truck. it has absolutley no hesitation but runs extremely rich. (it doesnt ever require choke to start and had a slightly black exhaust). Could the jets be different on these different model carburators? any help would be appreciated. im about to go crazy over this
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Oct-02 AT 11:29 PM (EST)]HAve you tried adjusting the idle mixture screw on the base plate of your carb, it is most likely the idle screw or your float is set to high.
Hope I helped.

If you have pinpointed the hesitation to the carb, I'd begin with rebuilding one of your carbs. A kit is under $20. This eliminates a lot of time fooling around. Once you have new parts in a clean carb with properly set float and idle circuit, you can experiment with different jet sizes, if still needed. A hesitation can indicate the need to increase your jet size. Start with one size at a time. If you go 2 sizes with no noticeable difference, then you are probably on the wrong track. On a stock carb, the jets can be permanently drilled larger if you have a small number size drill kit. Otherwise, purchase new jets or rob them from another carb. The size should be stamped on the jet.
The carb that come off the truck orginally and has no hesitation has a kit in it already. the problem with it is that it runs too rich. ive tried adjusting it, but it dont help much. You can hold a white rag on the tailpipe and goose it and it will make it sooty. the other carb with the hesitation doesnt make it sooty
