I removed my clutch fan and replaced it with an electric. No one else on this board seems to have done it though.
I have a 97 Mountaineer with a V8. I'm guessing you have the 4.0L?
It was hard for me to remove it, I needed a second hand. You also need a big wrench. Apparently AutoZone will let you borrow one. I was unaware of that fact when I removed my fan.
I ran into a problem with the first electric fan being too wide. Or, deep I guess. Thick? I bought a flex-a-lite fan, and it was way too fat to fit.
I sent it back and bought a Perma-cool fan. Cheaper, better airflow, and less amp draw.
I would say that everyone should have this 'upgrade' done to their truck. But this usually starts some sort of debate. It's my opinion, and since I'm the only one on this board that actually did the switch (that I know of anyway) I'm sticking with my opinion.
Do it, get help if you need it for the A/C wiring relay, have a friend who knows a thing or two about cars to help you.
More HP, More MPG, better cooling.
Tips for choosing a fan. Go with the highest airflow rating, and the lowest amp draw. Try to choose a fan that will fit your radiator. Always choose a 'puller' fan.
Good luck.
Actually there are a few older posts on this for 4.0's. Feeedback is more power, better cooling. I've not done it but have chaged out the fan an cluthc a couple times. Not hard, need the right wrench.
I like to have 1 smaller fan ticking over all the time to prevent hot air building up in the engine bay and a larger fan that kicks butt when it needs to.
