Fan removal?

How do you remove the fan from a 351M? I need to put a fan shroud on. Can I just take the four bolts off the base?

Think I found my answer. For some reason I wasn't able to find this searching from my phone.

Fan assembly for the 8-351M, 8-400 and 1978-83 8-460

1. Remove the fan shroud and lay it back over the fan.
2. If you need the clearance, remove the radiator.
3. Remove the 4 fan clutch-to-water pump hub bolts and lift off the fan/clutch assembly.
4. Remove the 4 fan-to-clutch bolts and separate the fan from the clutch.
5. Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the all the bolts to 18 ft. lbs.

Yes. Except that you will probably have to loosen the fan belt.

Well I got the four bolts out. Didn't have to loosen the belt but I did have to invest in a 7/16" open-ended ratchet. I put a shroud on I ordered from Jeff's Bronco Graveyard but it doesn't fit perfect and the fan blades are scraping about 1/4 of the shroud. I plan on trimming the shroud about 1/4" in that portion to make it work.

So, is it hitting in just one spot? Is there a way to center it better?

The only thing I think would work would be to shim the radiator to angle it some, but it would have to be quite a bit. I plan on using a dremel to shave back the spot the fan is hitting. I am really trying to not take it off, lol.

Something isn't right, like you have the wrong shroud for the application. I have the shroud part numbers here: Shroud Part #'s - ???Gary's Garagemahal. And illustrations for how they mount are here: Cooling System Illustrations - ???Gary's Garagemahal.

I don't think it could be any other one than what I ordered. I ordered this one which fits the measurements of my core. The other option is this one which is larger and (by the looks) the opening sits further to the right, which would make my problem worse.

NPD also shows the same shroud for a '79 4x4.

I have a 351M 4x4 w/ A/C

I might see if I drop it down an inch and re-drill the mounting holes.

You ordered D8TZ-8146-B. And the other one is D8TZ-8146-B. Neither are the one my page says you should have.

MY BAD! Apologies!!!! I forgot what forum I was in. Yes, you are right as I see in your pic. But, what year do you have?

From what I see in the catalog, a 351M with A/C takes D7TZ 8146-A.

No problem. I was slightly confused for a moment, lol.

The one I ordered everyone has listed as a D7TA-AA 8146-B or 8146-9. This is the actual one I ordered: 1977-1979 Extra Cooling Shroud-Broncograveyard.com

Here's what the catalog shows. The only one that fits a truck with a 351 and A/C is D7TZ 8146-A. And note that under description it shows D7TA-AA. That's usually what the part has stamped or printed on it. Futher up in the catalog for a 302 there's a D8TZ 8146-B and it is marked D8TA-BA. So, I believe JBG is wrong. The part they have should not be a D8TZ 8146-B and be marked D7TA-AA. Those are two different parts.

I wonder why just about all of the major parts dealers have the D7TA-AA listed? Hmm... doesn't seem anyone sells a 8146-A either. I wonder if the D7TA-AA fits normally but something is out of whack with my truck? It bolted right up and seems to fit otherwise.

Update: I found a diagram for the 8146-A. It looks to be almost the same dimensions except the opening is half-an-inch larger and the shroud is half-an-inch taller. The opening might be positioned differently too. I haven't found anyone that sells it though.
