Hi guys, I have a 1985 6.9L original radiator seems to have a leak somewhere on the top passenger side. any suggestions as to what I should do? buy a replacement, have the original one 're-done', or any other suggestions are welcome. also, how much am I going ot have to spend?
A new radiator will run $350-450. You can have yours rebuilt for substantially less than that....at least around here you can. Dunno about getting it done in NY.
I would say find a radiator shop close to you and get an estimate.
But I will also say with the amount of salt the highway department uses during NY winters you probably need it recored which is still less than new by a long shot here in WV.
It's probably the upper cap coming undone from the middle core section. That radiator served you well for twenty years. Put it out to pasture and get a new one. If you get it fixed you will soon develop leaks in other places. I got a new one that looks as good as the old one for $375. It's an easy swap...only bad part is draining the coolant...never a pretty evolution.
I get mine from a local auto parts store (napa). This one has more than a normal one because we are in a farming area. Also check with a TSC store if you have one in the area.
Parching radiators really should only be done as a very temporary fix, just to buy a little time to get it fixed properly or replaced. Otherwise you are asking to be stuck on the side of the road on a hot day.
When the radiator in my '84 went it cracked the tank at the seam, couldn't be repaired. New one cost $400, that sucks, but the big trucks cost big bucks and so do the repairs.
