89 fat boy

Im thinking about putting my truck on the back burner and buying a 89 fat boy with low miles, all original, old man owned and not ridden in a while but started every so often.I miss my yamahaha i had 15 years ago and the price of gas is killin me plus I would have no problem riding a bike this summer at all.Im wondering how long it will last before needing rebuilt and how hard it is to do yourself and how much.I also have a chance to get a 01 750 shadow for a real good price.Im thinking I should go with the fat boy because it wont lose as much value. But I dont want to be looking at a bike that needs motor work or repair of some sort when I could buy the honda and just change oil and basic maintenance for 50,000 miles. But a fat boy is way cooler than a shadow.I can always work on my truck at a later time as id rather ride a bike this summer.

Any ideas about the harley.I understand it is one of the first evolution motors that came out.someone told me about every 20,000 or you need to redo the heads and some other things.Does he sound right?

Another thing is in 3 or 4 years the fat boy will still be worth 5 or 6 grand probably and the honda 1000.

Thanks for any input

Evos came out in 83 or 84, they are a lot better than shovels as far as logevity goes. If you maintain it well you can get 50-60000miles out of an evo without a rebuild. If it does need a rebuild they are quite simple and very cheap for parts to rebuild it stock. Modifying the engine for more power(which they desperately need) is where the trouble starts, it can make them unreliable and also drastically shorten the life of the engine. I'd say buy the Fatboy I don't think you will be dissapointed.

I have a '90 evo in my Sportster 50K mi. without a hickup! I'm not specifically familliar with the FatBoy but I would be surprized if it needed a rebuild sooner than 80K. Sitting unused for a long stretch might have some significance, idunno. You might try your question at this forum: http://www.v-twinforum.com/forums/ too, lots of folks with answers there.

I ride a 1973 Harley, its never been completely rebuilt, just top ends. They are excellent for resale, and great on gas. That said, given the price of Harley parts, specialized labor (unless you have experience working on HDs) and the need for frequent maintainence, and, yes the do break down and need repair once in a while, given all that, in the long run I'm not sure it's a "money saving" thing to do. Would I do it? Heck yes! But they are not cheap to own..
