I noticed some oil drips on the garage floor. Mentioned this when I took truck in for an oil and filter change last week. Report says it was CMP sensor leaking. O rings on sensor replaced. What is the CMP sensor?? Something to do with the camshaft?
Oil and filter change was $92.60. Ouch!
Thanks
The CMP sensor is the Camshaft Position Sensor. On diesels, at least the way it is explained to me by the tech that is training me, is that it does the job of what a crankshaft position sensor would do on a gasoline engine. It lets the PCM(Powertrain Control Module) know the position of each piston, which stroke they are on so it can know when to fire off. Also, I think you got a pretty good deal on the oil change, it would be about another 30 bucks where I work. What year truck do you own?
There is a CKP, crankshaft position sensor as well as a CMP, camshaft postion sensor on the 6.0L.
This is from the '6.0L Bible'
"The PCM needs both the CKP and CMP signal to calculate engine speed and position. The CKP creates a signal that relates to crankshaft speed and position relative to TDC (Top Dead Center). The CMP creates a signal relative to which stroke the piston is currently on (compression or exhaust)."
I have an 05.
Sounds like that sensor is quite important! I was afraid the leak was from the bell housing area that everyone talks about.
Usually the dealership has a coupon for $10 off the oil change but not this time. With fuel filter change it was over $200 for that visit.
Still very happy with truck though and am about to put it to work pulling my boat and travel trailer.
Thanks
