My transmission overheated pulling a 4,000lb trailer. I bought a trans cooler, brought it home, started looking around and discovered my truck has a trans cooler between the condenser of the a/c and the intercooler. It is not very big and judging from the fins, not very efficient.
My Question. Should I run the new cooler in series with the other two, or eliminate the cooler between the condenser coil and the intercooler???
Oh! by the way. Did the 01 superduty come with a trans cooler.
All the SD trucks came with trans coolers. The ones for the V10 and the PSD are different sizes though. Oddly, the V10 cooler is bigger. Run them in a series like luke said.
Luke, does the trans fluid go through the radiator or the stock cooler first?
Take a look around and you will see the different sizes of coolers.....The 6.0 cooler is a MEGA cooler compared to the stock or even the V10 filter. I put one of these on my V-10 AND my PSD.....just to make sure.....They fit well and are exact fit, except for some adapters on the fluid lines....Good luck....Dave
i think its plumbed through the rad 1st then aux cooler 2nd from the factory, but im not 100%. That is how my tranny guy istructed me to do it when i was running 2 coolers. Now im running a 6oh torqshift cooler by itself and it dropped trans temps almost 50* over running 2 coolers!
Sorry for calling it a V-10 filter........Ive been on Fleetfilter.com researching filters and seems like I had a case of "filter on the brain".....Seriously, the 6.0 tranny cooler is awesome.....

Very interesting, luke. What was the second cooler you were running, in addition to the stock one? I'm thinking that plumbing a 6.0 cooler inline with the stock one would work the best.
i was running a 10x15" straight through flat cooler (cant remeber what brand). With a 6oh cooler i dont think there is any need to plumb the the stock cooler in. Before the 6oh cooler i never had any temp problems unless i was doing alot of heavy towing in stop and go city environment, then it would tend to go 220+* on me. Also before it ran about 160 empty and 180 towing on hwy, now with 6oh cooler empty it was well below 120. Ive only got to drive it about 350 miles or so since cooler install (engine broke on the way home from tranny guy lol) so i havent towed yet, but with the results ive seen so far i think it will preform very well towing.
Well, you can always get a new one from the dealer, or you can check salvage yards or eBay for some too. The fittings you should be able to find at pretty much any hardware store, auto parts store, or if you have a hydraulic shop near you that will work too.
i definately recommend a tru-cool max from dieselsite. its very big and and easy to install. since ive put it in my trans hasnt gotten over 125 even towing 5k. i think it is definately worth the $115
