Hey All
In a 1986 F150 4x2 with a 302 short box with the automatic with OD. What tranny will fit back into here? I have been told a C-6. Will not a C-4 out of a 1980 with a 302 fit in there. and if so what changes would need to be done? I would put the stock tranny back in but they are running at an extremely high price for a run around truck that is not in the best of shape to start with.
If I was to look for a donor Car? truck for the C-6 what they be?
Thanks for all the help guys
Duncan
Still waiting for the snow to go
You would need a C6 or a C4 that was originally behind a 300, 302, or 351W. They all have the same bellhousing bolt pattern. The smallblock C6 trannies are a little harder to find, your best bet would be to look for light duty F-250's, as they usually had a 300 or 302.
Still on the same topic would the AOD from a long box fit where the short box tranny was. Someone told me that the trannys are different that the one from a long box wont fit in there that it is to long. I find this hard to believe but who knows. Also with all the other tranny swaps what would I have to do for the driveshaft lengths if anything?
Thanks
Duncan
The tranny is the same length whether you have a shortbed or a longbed truck, only the driveshaft length is different. On the other hand, if you have a 4x4, the rear part of the tranny known as the tailshaft WILL be shorter to fit a transfer case to it. It won't have the "cone" to it so you can bolt the t-case to it, it'll be flat with the output shaft poking through.
If you were to go from an AOD to a C6 or C4, it should fit in your truck no problem, it might be shorter, I can't say for sure, but you may just have to drill some new holes in the crossmember. Your gear selector may not work with it though, as it was made to operate a 4spd auto and a C6/C4 only has 3 gears. You could swap the correct assembly from another truck, or get one of those universal automatic floor shifters they make for trucks. I think they usually cost around $100, and you will have to cut a hole in your floor.
