I just bought a 2001 F350 with the 7.3 liter. Im kind of new to the whole diesel thing but am interested in getting the most power out of it. Iv heard of tuners and know how those work but what exactly is the difference between that and a chip? Which one provides more bang for the buck? How does it work and where do you hook it up at? Is instalation very complicated? Any information would be great thanks.
Welcome, Hang around a bit and start saving some money, You may want to read this soon. Its prolly to late since your asking about mods: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=480218
You will get more info than a single mind can absorb.
On a more serious note, Has you truck had any mods done to it, exhaust, intake, ect.? If not I would do an intake mod and a larger exhaust first, then prolly gauges to see what you other mods are doing, then go for the chips and tuners and all the other toys they keep making for us.
dp-tuner.com Jody Tipton has some awesome tunes that everyone seems to like. I have a 4-position (stock, 40, 80, 120) and it sure is wonders over the Diablosport Predator I had prior to it. Look here for a general "chip" installation: http://www.dieselinnovations.com/tec...ip_install.pdf
If you don't have gauges yet, I would get gauges first. Check out www.blackclouddieselperformance.com for a great deal on some Autometer gauges (3-pod setup, painted to match your interior with all wiring necessary for $300 shipped!)
So if my truck did have a chip there would be wires coming out of that computer thats on the driver side kick panel right? If not, how can i see if it has anything done to it allready?

If you had a multi-position chip, you would have wires coming from the PCM somewhere. If it were a single-burn chip you would have to remove the plastic cover and see if there is a chip plugged into the end of the PCM that is facing towards the rear of the truck. If the PCM has been re-flashed with a tune, a dealer would find it when scanning the PCM.
