Timing Gears

I have a 1992 F150 4x4 and I was wondering if the stock timing gears in these trucks are retarded 4 degrees? I know that the 400/351M are retarded 4 degrees and I have swapped the gears out in them before and ran them straight up with a noticable difference.

From what I understand degreeing a 300 to straight up helps a whole bunch with low end. Does it also help or hinder mid and top range power? I have been interested in doing this to my truck for a while.

Your 300 has top end power? I doubt that it will matter much since the entire practical operating range for the 300 is really considered the low end. Ford retarded the cams in the 460 as well and moving them back to straight up is supposed to help everywhere below 5500 rpm. Whether or not it really does is anybody's guess. If I ever get a free weekend I'm going to put the straight up gears in my truck and go back to the dyno. Once I get the gears changed I can go about testing some of my other stuff.

Well I concider 4000 rpms higher end power. I take my truck up in the dunes in the summer time playin. When I do big hill climbs I usually roll up to the base of the hill, then stand on it all the way up...I just hold it to the floor until I break over the top of the hill. I run it in 4hi/2nd gear all the way to the top, it hits 4000 and stays there...no higher no lower kinda like a diesel. I know most diesels hate 4k rpm range. Anyway there has to be some kind of power up there or it wouldn't rev that high...am I right? When I run it in the mud bogs I have hit 4500- 4600 rpms it feels pretty strong up there. No not as strong as a V8 but you can still feel a little bit of power up there. My 300 is not stock though, that must have something to do with it.
