My truck is in the shop now and they are saying I need a new steering column. they said there is this guide piece for the ignition rod that broke and its a part of the column and not something that can be replaced. I went to bronco graveyard and part of the piece they showed me looks like the ignition actuator. the problem started when my truck would not crank but if you starting it with the auto start it would run fine. I took it to the shop and they looked at it and told me I would need a new column because this piece part of the column itself and not replacable. I don't really know what to do I want to fix it since I want to keep my truck, but my truck is pretty beat up and not worth sinking a lot of money into. I would be greatful for any advice you guys can give me.
that was what i wanted to do, but the guy at the shop said that now that the piece fell out when they took it apart to see what was wrong the auto start thing probably won't work he did say i could start it with a screw driver though moving this switch.
is this a trusted mechanic or is this just some of the wall place you just happened to take you bronco? I doubt very seriously that the hole steering column has to be changed...
where there is a will, there is a way...there is alway a way to rig it to start...
I agree with JLMoreno. The likelihood that the ENTIRE column needs to be replaced over ONE part of the ignition system borders on ridiculous. Your 91, like many of the 87-91 vintage, is known for having the actuator rod snap because its made of pot metal. It can be replaced and the entire column need not be.
Yes, you can get this part from the ford dealership, I got one the other day. They'll probably even have it in stock since it is crap metal and seems to be a common issue. There was a recall on the ignition switch, but ford will no longer honor any recalls that go back further than 10 years. I can't figure out how I'm going to get the new one in without bending it. Anyone have any tips??
