Big_saxy, check your owners manual for it's recommendation for crankcase grade & viscosity rquirements when operating under these conditions & temperatures & go with what it specifies.
ya, i have a a dealer installed package. hitch, electric brake control super springs even went to slotted drilled rotors. i keep my trailer weight under 7500. most of the time. does very well for a half ton truck. I cars back and forth from phoenix and las vegas. it gets hot down here. real hot! does 5.20 cool better then 5.30?
yes 5w20 is able to remove heat much faster than 5w30, most 5w30 oils turn into 5w20 within 3k so the idea with 5w20 was to start with and end with a very shear stable grade of oil and so far it has proven to be a great success.
Did he also install a good quality flat plate cooler for the tranny????
You know, you would likely be a good canidate for a good synthetic crank case lube, with a high volatility number, that can take the heat like Havoline.
Don't know what's specified for your engine, but the Havoline synthetic 10W-30 has a 496F volatility. I think their 5W-30 is like 470-475F, I think it was.
Don't remember what their soon to be released full synthetic 5W-20 was.
Too thick an oil can stay in the top end of an engine too long & get tharshed & cooked to death up there, before it'll drain back to the oil sump, taking some of the heat with it.
So, too viscous a lube can cause the oil & the top end to run hotter than it should & the oil sump to run lower than it's designed too.
So be sure to check you owners manual for the specified viscosity & SAE grade for your severe operating conditions.
ya, installed a large tranny cooler as well! thing works great. Im gonna check my manual for the specs on severe conditions. I figure mobile 1 is a pretty good oil but darn expensive. does havoline have better numbers then mobile?
OK, sounds like the Dealer did you up right on your tow package.
Don't know which Mobil you're trying to compare with other oils.
Check your manuals recommendations, then see which Mobil product meets that specification, then look at/ down load the compareable technical data on the web sites of the other brands you're considering & see how they each stack up for the parameters your interested in. Then choose the one that offers you the widest margin of safety, in the parameters you need.
if you are going to use Mobil 1 then use the 5w30 I like most others consider the 5w20 they make to be a joke. It has the lowest HT/HS of all the 5w20 oils out there right now and passed the ford test by just .10. The 5w30 they make is fine but it won't add any life to your engine.
well, i just went to wally world today and pick up a 5quart jug of 5-20 mc for $9.73 and a super tech filter for $2.03. plus an extra quart for $2.08. i read up on mobil 1 and now im not so impressed with it at all... oh well.. reading the numbers the mc oil may not be the absolute best but the numbers are comparable to the most expensive pure synthetic numbers out there and for $2 you cant realy go wrong. im gonna try out these new super tech filters.. suppose to be a whole new style and filter. im sick of fram gaskets leaking.
I sometimes use the Supertech filters in my other vehicles, but I wouldn't in an overhead cam Ford. Only Motorcraft. That's because of the silicone anti-drain back valve, and the positioning of the bypass. I have not found any other regular cost filters with these features.
I have used the Supertech filters on my 03 with the 5.4 and they have worked fine no start up noise but most of the time they are out of the the ST2 i need so i buy the FL820S for 3.28.
buy a remote oil filter kit then splice a cooler into the return line. But i will bet you 100% a oil cooler is way overkill for eceryday use and is not a needed upgrade.
