Got back from camping this weekend, tranny did awesome as well as new chip. EGTs very nice and controllable. I noticed a little noise last fall when towing some of the larger hills, but today it was definately louder. Thought it was turbo last time, I replaced the shaft bushings about month ago, but the pitch of the squeal doesn't change with the turbo at all. It really sounds like a bearing going out, but only does it under heavy load. Only time it has happend is when towing the 5ther up hill at or around WOT. I backed out of it as not knowing what it was, sound stops around 2000 rpm, push back into it, I can hear it starting up again. Odd part is, when on flats, I can push it above 2000 rpm with no "squealing" at all. Truck is a Pre-99. Also, sounds like it is coming from the driver side of engine. Have just over 100K on truck.
My thoughts so far have to deal with fueling and starving injectors for either fuel or oil. Could be way off though, any thoughts? probably will stop by local shop tomorrow as they are right next to the RV dump and talk it over with them some as well.
I can definately hear the fan clutch lock up, or at least the affects of increased air noise. Is there a way to verify the clutch, I am going to install a new belt as I don't ever recal doing it, hopefully that will cure it. It does vary with the engine RPM, I will have to check it out and see. Thanks for the replys.
Well a new belt wasn't the problem, but it was time for a change so no worries there now. Maybe squeal wasn't the best word choice. I am going to record a sound bit when I bring the trailer back home next Sunday. All fluids are fine. After listening to it again this weekend going up, it almost sounds like something is not getting lubricated when on incline. Main hill it does it on is a 7% grade.
Mine was making a high pitched squeal under high boost condiditions only. Checked everything I could find with no luck. Finally found the boot on my Y-pipe was leaking under heavy boost. The surfaces were not mated good and the air leaking out around the boot sounded as if a cat was caught in the fan. I realigned and tightened boot up and no more cat noises.
