If I were to take a 360 block to a machine shop to have the following things done what would each individual thing about cost.
Line bore-
cylendars honed-
or cylendars bored if needed-
install cam bearings-
leveling the surface where the block contacts the heads-
cleaning block-
I know that it is not always necessary to do all of these things on a block but I currently have one in the shop now and it's my first time going to a machine shop and I don't want to get ripped off. I told the guy to basically check it over and do what is necessary and I want to have an idea of what I should be paying when I go in there to pick it up.
thanks for any help
brad
I had my 302 machined. I had it bored .030 over, including the hone. Old cam bearings removed, new installed. New connecting rod bolts installed in reconditioned rods. and the block bead blasted. All theis for about $360.00. I am in denver and I am sure prices vary around the country.
After losing the timing gear out of my '67, I decided to have the entire engine rebuilt. Everything that moves short of the crank will be brand new. The enigne will be .040 over and the crank ground to .010 under. The new cam will be in, along with new cam bearings, the pistons will be hung, the rods will be connected. The lifters, push rods and new head (was cheaper than rebuilding mine), will all be on. My bill will be $1295.00
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Nov-02 AT 11:49 AM (EST)]I hope this helps because I useto work a machine shop in tex
you don't have to go with a line bore unless you spun the main bearings or cam bearing or lost the orig main caps this costs up around $125-175. some time its cheaper to get another block
to hone a block is about $30-40
to punch out is from $5-9 a hole
install cambearings 18.50
to deck the block is $65... hope this helps you get an idea
Oh and don't pay more than $30 to clean and check the block
You did not mention where you live. That can make a HUGE difference!
I moved from Louisiana to the SF bay area.
Let me tell you, the dollar is only worth about 50 cents out here. Of course, you make twice the money, the guy at the shop does too.
Hot tanking (cleaning the block): $80
Installing cam bearings: $50 (each stroke with the hammer $2!)
Needless to say that I kept it with that. No reboring was needed but I'd done it back in Louisiana. Next time I need cam bearings, I'll buy the Lisle tool myself ($120). Twice used I'd pay for it!
