Amazing. I have never heard of one crashing either. Used to hump those pups when I was in the Air Force....even when empty we set a perimeter around them just because thy cost so much...And that was in the mid-70's. Dang those suckers are HUGE.
Wierdest thing about them is they are so big they look like they are moving incredibly slow when they come in to land or take off. Almost as if they were floating.
They're still coming in at well over a hundred, but the scale fools the eye.

I remember hearing that they take off at 60mph and ya, they 're going so slow they look like they should drop out of the sky! Lifting body design so they don't rely only on the wings for lift - I wonder how much of the lift comes from the body. I used to watch them do touch-and-goes all day when I was in Rota, Spain - what a show.
Pilot was doing a touch and go. But he forgot to put the gear down..
He attempted to do a scrap and go, but thought better of it.
So he made full stop landing, and slid off the runway..
All the lift on a C-5 comes from the wings. The body is designed that way for cargo.
I believe minimum take off speed is somewhere over 130 knots (no cargo).
A lifting body design has the wings connected to the bottom of the fuelage. Basically turning the lower surface of the aircraft in to giant wing. Like the Space Shuttle, or a Delta wing aircraft.

I worked on them things in 69 at Lockheed.
It seems like one had crashed and they were grounded because of wing fatige.
I could be rong which is very likely since my memory card needs to be xpanded.
I think a C-5 went down when we pulled out of Viet Nam.
It was one of the last planes to leave and was loaded with people.
It was I think either shot down or overloaded and crashed on take off.
Still I could be rong. If I am please correct me!!!
I remember the first time I ever saw one land. I was about 9 weeks in the Air Force, saw it coming down. Freaked me out because it was coming down nose first. I thought he was going to crash, but just before he landed, the nose was pulled up.
Did you know that was the first big plane to fly coast to coast without pilot assistance. The pilot taxied out, the plane took off on its own, flew to the east coast on its own, landed on its own, and the pilot taxied it off the runway.
Hey Chugalug, I remember hearing about the C-5A that went down leaving what I believe was Saigon, loaded with orphans coming to the states. I am just glad to see that all 17 guys made it out with minor injuries. I read an article today that said the last C-5 crash was in 1990
There are 2 C5s parked at on the tarmac, and one of them is up on jacks. What does it mean?
That airbase only has one set of jacks
The C5 is famous for having the gear always breaking...
That thing is ginormous though; you can play football in the back of it while in flight.
they must have been really heavy to crash from just having the #2 flameout.
Glad to see they made it out ok
